Reason to rent: Find your headspace in this nod to minimalism and Scandinavian design.
Bear Cove 22 began as a New York Times real estate listing featuring a '70’s structure that was home to a family of raccoons, and supposedly a bear, set on an overgrown piece of land. The property was once owned by a sheep farmer (who lost it in a card game), so there were several stone walls, some crumbled and buried, waiting to be restored. The current owners couldn't resist, and five months later embarked on a gut renovation.
The result is this country retreat with a contemporary vibe that beckons urban dwellers upstate. Two hours north of Manhattan and situated within the most beautiful rolling hills of the Mid-Hudson Valley, are 2.5 lush, green acres; the idyllic setting for Bear Cove 22.
Light floods through large, south-facing windows and skylights throughout the day onto a thoughtfully designed interior. Minimal design dictates the loft like openness of the living area with its cathedral ceiling emphasizing stunning views of the surrounding grounds and two ponds.
The rooms are furnished with both modern and vintage pieces, while the simple, open design kitchen features a concrete countertop island that faces the dining area.
One queen bedroom and the bathroom are on the main level. The upstairs open loft has an additional queen bed and presents itself as a private oasis, with no visibility of the downstairs. The newly created downstairs area (formerly the bear hibernation quarters) is now transformed into a third private bedroom. Though there is no bedroom door, it still offers privacy of the full floor. This beautifully acquainted addition has a full pull-out sofa bed, which will only be arranged as a bed, and opens out to another deck. Here the hammock and outdoor seating are your first stops to exploring the outdoors.
Back upstairs, the large deck off the living room offers an elevated, treehouse-like, vantage point over the grounds, and is where grilling, dining or just chilling are the ways that this property will help you get back to yourself.
In wintertime, there is a kind of snow globe experience as you watch the flakes fall through all the glass, from the warmth and comfort gathered around the sleek Scandinavian wood burning fireplace.
While one pond is kept wild, with a backdrop of ferns and trees, the other is a natural spring fed swimming pond. In the wintertime it freezes over to turn into a perfect ice skating rink (snow notwithstanding).
Though the house is popular as a tranquil retreat, it also functions as a photography and film location. Ask us about location rates!
A note from the owners: The house is not appropriate for children under the age of 6 due to various stairs and decks.
