Choosing

When you’re choosing from our carefully selected group of vacation properties, please keep in mind the maximum number of people the house can accommodate, and also if the property and layout suit if you have young children. There are links on all of the property pages to local area profiles, sometimes with listing of events, activities and local sights that should help you narrow down your selection. There is also an interactive map that can help you get a fix on where our houses are located.

Expectations

You will arrive to a clean, warm (if winter) home with fresh linens on the beds, and there will be wood for fires. Almost all houses are used by their owners, and are not “investment properties”, but rather cherished homes they have decided to share.  So the expectation is that renters will treat them with care and consideration. On departure you are asked to leave the house broom clean, dispose of perishable food, and reference the Info Sheets for details on how to handle garbage and thermostats.

Rates & Availability

Check the rates and availability by clicking on the links at the top of each listing’s page. If the date is clear, email (or call) Red Cottage Inc. using any of the email links on the website (usually at the bottom of each page) and we’ll reply with an attached Rental Agreement (see link to sample at lower left of this page). Read the agreement carefully, fill out the details, and remit with payment. There is a 2% surcharge for payments made by credit card.

Security Deposit

There is a security deposit required for all rentals, and amount varies by property. Most people choose to provide a credit card number which is authorized for this amount, but not charged, unless there is damage of some kind.

Directions, Keys & Other Info

Once the signed Rental Agreement and payment have been received, we will email you info sheets that include the address and phone number of the property, directions from New York City, location of the key and details about the house itself. Some houses have wood stoves, for example, and there would be step by step instructions for their use, and others request circuit breaker switches to be turned on upon arrival.

We try to incorporate listings of things like tasty restaurants, good antiques shops, waterfalls, great drives, where to buy farm fresh eggs, and great bicycling routes.

Of course we really want you to pick the property that’s right for you, and to make the most of your trip. There is a nice variety, from rustic cabins in the woods, to romantic country getaways and great family spots.
