In & Around the Claryville, Liberty, Grahamsville, Neversink area
In & Around the Claryville, Liberty, Grahamsville, Neversink area
Claryville and Liberty are about 30 and 20 minutes, respectively, from Livingston Manor, so there is overlap with the town profile for that area.
Claryville
A lot of people who live within a half hour of Claryville have never ventured up the hill to see what’s up there. Aside from the Frost Valley YMCA, which attracts tens of thousands of people to its exceptional 4,000 acre facility, there is little commerce, and after a sufficient 12 miles or so, the main road dead ends. But in many ways that’s one of the most beautiful things about the town. It’s an oasis, with miles of forest opening to a few heart-stopping views. And with the headwaters of the Neversink River appearing and disappearing as one drives, hikes, cycles, it has scenic opportunities galore, with few sounds but those generated by Mother Nature.

-Lisa Lyons of Morgan Outdoors in Livingston Manor pens several brief but useful descriptions of worthwhile hikes in the western Catskills on our separate Hiking page.
-The new 3.1 mi. Liberty Rail Trail, great for hiking, biking, snow shoeing and x-country skiing has been created from the old tracks of the O&W Railroad, just outside Liberty Village. Their sister site, LibertyBikeTrail.org is another good source of info.

Fly Fishing
The Neversink River runs through Claryville, although it is almost exclusively privately owned. Check out the public fishing access spots below the dam. Some of the best public access trout fishing can also be found nearby on the famous Willowemoc and Beaverkill Rivers. Here’s a good article that ran in the Daily News. The Catskill Fly Fishing Center & Museum in Livingston Manor is a hub for instruction, events, and history surrounding the sport that was introduced to America in this very area. We know a wonderful professional fishing guide who would be happy to share his knowledge (and of course some wonderful stories!). Catskill Flies is the best shop around for flies and equipment, and they have a good daily river conditions report on their site.
Concerts / Woodstock Museum
Bethel Woods Center for the Arts is an outstanding new addition to Sullivan Co., located on the site of the famous 1969 concert. It is an exquisite outdoor concert venue with spectacular farmland views, and now a new museum dedicated to the concert.
