In & Around Greenport, on Long Island’s North Fork

With homes and buildings dating back as far as the 1700s, Greenport was once a prominent whaling port. As such, the Long Island Railroad ran a line to the town, making it a transportation hub, and during Prohibition, an obvious center for “rum runners”. Today the small, seaside town is sought out for its charming historic district, appealing retail shops and notable dining opportunities.

More recently, the addition of Mitchell Park, a 4 acre space on Greenport Harbor, has become the centerpiece for live music, public docks, outdoor theatre, ice skating, and the jewel in the crown: Greenport’s famous 40 foot carousel, built in the 1920s.

Greenport Village is one square mile, so renting a bike at The Bike Stop (200 Front St., 631-477-2432) is a popular mode of transport.

The North Ferry Company provides service to Shelter Island.
