http://www.redcottageinc.com/redcottageinc/rentals/Pages/tenb.html It had been several years since I’d been in the Hudson area, and on this grey winter day, the sideways rain threatened to ruin my first impression of Ten Broeck Cottage, an architect-owned dwelling marrying a small house rich in area history, with a very modern addition. But such was not the case, as the house, in spite of its minimal decor and modern design, offers a warm welcome through its use of natural materials, including luxurious 15” and wider reclaimed pine floor boards, elevated slate hearth, and amazing dining table featuring pine hewn from a fallen tree on the property, and earthy palette. Through the front door of the historic house, which had been the original home of the Ten Broecks, the largest landholders in Columbia County at one point, you’re struck (literally, if you’re over 6’4 tall) by these gorgeous original beams in the living room. The room is oriented to the two-sided fireplace which adds ambience to the dining room on the other side of the wall as well. Comfortable sectional seating and shaggy Flokati rug add to the casual-luxe feel. And if TV/DVD viewing is on the cards, a flat screen is secreted behind push latch walnut cabinetry (as is a fantastic sound system that enables you to play different tunes in various parts of the house - bring your iPod or help yourself to their impressive and eclectic music and DVD library). The upstairs of this old section has two very simple queen bedrooms separated by a bright bathroom with claw foot tub (and heated towel rack, which is such a great amenity). Back downstairs off the living and dining rooms you enter the kitchen, which is in the modern addition, and are immediately captivated by the outdoors, as there are windows everywhere. In fact, the entire rear of this extension is windows, although areas are cleverly divided up by sleek cabinetry. The kitchen is divine, with stainless steel counters and storage that is smart and user-friendly. The only handle to break up the smooth surfaces is the oven. Then a short corridor leads past another bathroom, this with shower, then a translucent plexiglass pocket door opens to reveal the master bedroom, which has a glass door to the backyard, a letterbox window along the side, which looks out at a red shed, and another large window for massive amounts of light. The bonus is the downstairs area, which has a sauna and a steam shower. Ten Broeck Cottage, as most houses were back in the day, is near the road, albeit a sparsely traveled one. In fact, the rural thoroughfare boasts apple orchards as far as the eye can see in some stretches (40 acres of apples are across the street). Ten Broeck Cottage retains four acres of Rome apple trees, which provide bountiful fruit in August and September (yes, help yourself). The Taghkanic Creek runs alongside the property boundary, and there are “plunge spots” to cool off on a summer’s day. Or just pull up an Adirondack chair and read your book or nap in the hammock along the water’s edge. The calming sound of the water is apparent from most spots near the house. For me, this house represents the uncluttered life so many of us strive for, allowing us to focus on the simpler, more important things. It’s a great spot to reconnect with friends and loved ones.
